Canadian department store chain Holt Renfrew has named a new president to lead the retailer’s expansion efforts.
Mario Grauso, a luxury industry veteran who is currently the president of Joe Fresh, will succeed president Mark Derbyshire, who is stepping down after seven years in the job. Strategizing for a seamless transition, Mr. Derbyshire will stay on until September, at which point Mr. Grauso will take over.
Changing leadership
Mr. Grauso has more than 20 years of retail experience, having worked at Céline, Calvin Klein and Giorgio Armani. From 2004-2009, he was president of Puig Fashion, the parent company of Carolina Herrera and Nina Ricci, and from there, he became president of the Vera Wang Group, a position he kept until 2013.
Most recently, Mr. Grauso has been at Joe Fresh. He joined the company as chief operating officer in 2013, becoming president in 2014. In his role, he is credited with leading Joe Fresh’s expansion into new markets, establishing new wholesale relationships and licensing the Joe Fresh brand for new categories, such as skin care and footwear.
“There are few senior leaders of Mario’s pedigree and proven track record of success in the luxury retail space, and we are delighted that he will bring his extensive experience to the leadership of Holt Renfrew,” said W. Galen Weston, chairman of Selfridges Group.
“Throughout his career leading some of the world’s most successful brands, Mario has demonstrated a superior ability to continually innovate and add value and we look forward to exciting new opportunities under his leadership to build on our premier position as a leading luxury retailer,” he said.
Mr. Derbyshire is leaving to “pursue other career opportunities.”
“I want to thank Mark for his significant contribution to Holt Renfrew over the years,” said Mr. Weston. “Under his leadership, the business has enhanced its iconic status as a world class retail brand and a leader in the Canadian market. We wish Mark every success and all the best in his future endeavors.”
Holt Renfrew is looking to grow its business through new locations and product offerings. First on the list is the opening of a 130,000-square-foot store in Mississauga’ Square One on July 28.
The retailer at long last entered the ecommerce space this past year.
The department store chain offers editorial content on two online magazines, “Holts Muse” and “Holts Men” to go along with ecommerce in cosmetics, skincare and fragrances on its Web site. The moves has made Holt Renfrew more visible as it continues to expand and fight off rival retailers’ entering into the Canadian market such as Saks Fifth Avenue (see story).
