German automaker Mercedes-Benz’s namesake stadium in Atlanta is debuting in virtual form.
Players of the new Madden NFL 17 video game will be the first to see a digital rendering of the Mercedes-Benz stadium, slated to finish construction in summer 2017. Automakers often find themselves featured in racing games, but this placement allows Mercedes-Benz to reach out to sports fans, particularly those cheering on the Atlanta team.
Game time
Mercedes-Benz signed a naming rights agreement for the new Atlanta stadium scheduled to open in 2017.
As the naming partner, the stadium will be referred to as Mercedes-Benz Stadium until the contract is up for renewal in 2042. The high amount of visibility the stadium will receive between athletics and other entertainment events will keep Mercedes-Benz top of mind among local consumers and those tuning in during game time (see story).

Rendering of Mercedes-Benz Stadium
The stadium will be home to the National Football League team the Atlanta Falcons and Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United Football Club.
This naming coincided with Mercedes-Benz’s move of its United States headquarters from New Jersey to Atlanta, allowing the team to connect with its new hometown over sports (see story).
Madden NFL 17 players can access the stadium within the games in two ways. The stadium can be selected in “play now” mode, or if they choose, fans can play a full season in “franchise mode” as the Atlanta Falcons at their current home the Georgia Dome, the completion of which will move the team to Mercedes-Benz stadium.
“As anticipation builds for the opening of Mercedes-Benz Stadium next summer, we’re excited that fans will be able to see it come to life early in Madden NFL 17,” said Steve Cannon, CEO of Atlanta Falcons owner AMB Group, in a statement. “The stadium is being designed with a focus on fans and the fan experience, so who better to see and play the first games virtually.”
Appliance retailer Pirch has appointed Andrea Dorigo its new president, looking to draw upon the executive’s experience within the luxury sector.
Mr. Dorigo was most recently at Luxottica Group, and he previously held roles at Giorgio Armani, and Safilo. As Pirch seeks to innovate and disrupt the retail game with its experiential showrooms, Mr. Dorigo’s background is expected to help the company expand.
Revamping retail
Mr. Dorigo will be in charge of overseeing all of the Pirch showrooms across the United States. The executive is also the taking the lead on Pirch’s organizational changes focused on best serving the customer.
From 2005, Mr. Dorigo has worked at eyewear designer, manufacturer and distributor Luxottica Group, gaining responsibilities as he was appointed to roles including president of Brooks Brothers and president of Oakley. Prior to Luxottica, Mr. Dorigo worked at eyewear group Safilo, Giorgio Armani and consultancy McKinsey & Company.
“We are delighted to welcome Andrea to the Pirch family,” said Jeffery R. Sears, CEO/co-founder of Pirch, in a brand statement.
“Andrea’s background is a natural fit for our brand growth and we look forward to him infusing his expertise, experience and leadership across retail into Pirch,” he said. “He is a strong addition to our executive team and will play a vital role in our growing business.”
Home retailer Pirch has expanded into the New York market with a SoHo showroom that opened May 21.
Pirch’s new showroom joins its network of eight locations across the United States, where it sells top-end kitchen, bath and outdoor appliances in a one-of-a-kind environment. The Pirch retail model allows consumers to try before they buy, letting homeowners “test drive” appliances, from sector leaders such as Sub-Zero, Kalamazoo and Wolf, right in its interactive showrooms (see story).
“I am excited to join such an energetic and passionate group of people. Pirch is driving meaningful change and innovation by empowering the customer and putting them at the center of everything we do,” Mr. Dorigo said. “One of the most compelling elements of the winning Pirch formula is the experience we offer our guests. I look forward to finding new ways to bring this inspiring concept to more people nationwide.”
Italian department store chain la Rinascente is putting a lens on Milanese street style for its fall/winter 2016 campaign.
Working with style blogger Scott Schuman of The Sartorialist and artist Jungwoo Kasiq, la Rinascente has captured six locals in both photography and illustration. Creating an authentic portrait of the spirit of Milan, the effort was cast from an open call to civilians.
“This collaboration is interesting because of the international approach it embraced,” said Dalia Strum, professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology and founder of Dalia Inc. and MommysToolbox.com, New York.
“With the photo shoot held in Milan, an American photographer and Japanese illustrator, it opens up interest to a vastly large audience,” she said.
Ms. Strum is not affiliated with la Rinascente, but agreed to comment as an industry expert.
La Rinascente was unable to comment directly before press deadline.
Personal style
People at la Rinascente builds off the “watercolors” campaign concept debuted this spring.
The effort is meant to portray the idea that a place, in this case Milan, is defined by its people.
The 12 spring/summer 2016 subjects were depicted in street-style photography and a coordinating illustration as well as a Cinemagraph. These captured a number of the characters that populate la Rinascente and its hometown, from the young to more mature and the casual to formal, allowing the retailer to show off its product selection and range.
During Milan Fashion Week in February, la Rinascente hosted a street casting with Mr. Schuman. Using direct marketing channels including social media and email campaigns, the store prompted its followers to attend for a chance to be photographed by the popular blogger.
la Rinascente Street Casting – Fashion Week
From this open call, la Rinascente cast its fall campaign.
Consumers can explore the personalities featured through a mobile-responsive microsite. Originally created for the spring effort, the hub now holds content for a new season.
“Unexpected classic” shows a woman wearing work-appropriate attire with a modern update, while “urban temper” finds a city wanderer with a camera dressed for exploring in a shearling coat.
A “glamorous spirit” is shown in high heels and a leather jacket by day as she bends the rules, and a man imbues “timeless elegance” with sharp suiting.
These profiles are explained in text, enabling consumers to get a better understanding of each style personality.

Also on the microsite, videos with Mr. Schuman and Mr. Kasiq take consumers inside the project.
Mr. Schuman explains that he does not actively look for subjects, but instead he responds to what he sees, since focusing too hard on one thing could mean missing something else. He also talks about the similarities between his and la Rinascente’s views on inclusivity.
In his film, Mr. Kasiq is seen illustrating in watercolor based on a photograph, as he did for la Rinascente. As he paints, he explains the process behind his art form, which requires him to move fast, as well as the way in which he approaches his work and the idea of fashion.
La Rinascente is again allowing consumers to share their own style by posting to social media with the hashtag #LaRinascentePeople.
Model behavior
In the age of social media, everyone thinks they have what it takes to be a model or style influencer. Brands have fed off this desire for a moment in the spotlight with open castings.
Last year, Canadian retailer Holt Renfrew similarly highlighted the diverse cast of characters in its network through a fall campaign aimed at fostering a sense of community.
“All Together at Holts” features 14 of the store’s customers and two sales associates from across Canada, who are shown in still imagery and in video talking about their individual sense of style. Going beyond those profiled in the campaign, Holt Renfrew is offering consumers the chance to be a part of the campaign through user-generated submissions, making this a truly democratic marketing effort (see story).
Also, Simon Malls and Condé Nast’s W magazine are teaming up to scout new modeling talent at shopping centers across the United States.
Beginning Aug. 20, modeling hopefuls will have the chance to attend casting calls at 10 different malls, during which they can vie for the chance to appear in W’s March edition and a Simon ad campaign. As a publication that prides itself on discovering the next big thing and nurturing young talent, hosting these open calls may enable W to spot the next big thing (see story).
“The opportunity to leverage user generated content could create a higher demand during international events, including Milan Fashion Week and the audience that it brings,” Ms. Strum said.

LVMH’s Sephora is attempting to ramp up sales for its own line of cosmetics by inviting Instagram users to follow the newly created account for Sephora Collection and participate in a sweepstakes that asks them to tag a friend in a daily post, resulting in a significant uptick in followers and greater brand awareness.
The beauty giant kicked off its I Want It, I Win It sweepstakes, which lets cosmetics enthusiasts enter for a chance to win swag packages including lipsticks, eyeshadows and mascara from Sephora Collection, this week. As Sephora attempts to boost sales for its proprietary makeup line, it is also hoping to significantly raise the collection’s standalone Instagram account’s number of followers, a feat that has already made headway since the contest’s inception.
“In order for brands to stay relevant in front of millennials, they need to pay close attention as this demographic can move from one social media brand to another without too much heads-up,” said Marci Troutman, CEO of SiteMinis. “Keeping a pulse on each social platform and working to gain likes across a mix of platforms is important as millennial consumers won’t be loyal when it comes to wanting to be on the latest, greatest platform.
“Brands need to keep in mind that just a few short years ago, there wasn’t a social media platform in existence.”
Coloring in cosmetics inspiration
Sephora took to its Instagram Stories account earlier this week to announce the start of the I Want It, I Win It sweepstakes. In a series of live posts, the beauty marketer advised Instagram users to follow its separate @SephoraCollection account and comment on the daily post by tagging a friend.
This makes individuals eligible for an entry into the contest, which gifts one daily winner with the products featured in the post.
Sephora is an early adopter of Instagram Stories
The first contest swag bag offered consumers a kit including a pro airbrush, 10 eyeliners, five cream lip stains, five rouge cream lipsticks, mascara and five colorful shadows – all by Sephora Collection.
The following day’s gift basket included 30 lip products, one for each day of the month.
Entrants can simply tag a fellow cosmetics fan in the comment section of each post to be eligible for the prize. The ease of entering will likely prompt more individuals to do so, while the act of tagging a friend will result in Sephora Collection’s new Instagram account reaching more smartphone screens in an organic way.
Sephora Collection’s number of Instagram followers increased by several thousand overnight between the first and second days of the promotion.
Sephora Collection lists the available prizes in each post
Instagram users who follow the new account will also likely receive inspiration regarding the latest beauty looks and products, which could prompt them to click the link in the retailer’s bio and visit its mobile site to shop featured items.
The I Want It, I Win It sweepstakes runs through August 28.
Interest in Instagram users
Several brands have been leveraging their sizable Instagram audiences in a bid to drive product sales and convince consumers to follow separate social media accounts for different lines.
For instance, J. Crew recently attempted to direct more attention toward its menswear line by introducing the J. Crew Men’s Instagram account, which enables followers to browse new and classic apparel and accessories before clicking a link in the retailer’s bio to purchase must-have items (see story).
A growing number of retailers are establishing separate accounts for menswear and womenswear collections, likely in an attempt to bolster mobile conversions and showcase only relevant content to followers.
Yesterday’s prize was a case of 30 lip products
Meanwhile, several months ago, Sephora ramped up excitement for Estée Lauder’s new Instagram account and cosmetics line by bringing its Snapchat followers behind-the-scenes with brand ambassador Kendall Jenner as she prepared for an appearance and modeled beauty products (see story).
Seeing as many of Sephora’s target customers are active on Instagram, the beauty marketer is well-poised to reach its goals with this latest promotion.
“A brand like Sephora posting an Instagram Story informing followers of a sweepstakes, which can be entered by following the @SephoraCollection Instagram account and tagging a friend to win, is the perfect marketing move to gain likes and grow its brand on Instagram,” Ms. Troutman said.
