U.S. automaker Tesla is issuing a voluntary recall for all of its Model X vehicles built before March 26.

While there have been no reported issues with the vehicle, the brand is giving the model’s owners the opportunity to have their second and third row seats repaired after they failed a strength test in Europe. The sport utility vehicle began shipments in September, and currently there are a total of 2,700 cars affected by this recall.

Safety precaution
Prior to the tests in Europe, the Model X seats passed 15 tests in the United States.

According to Reuters, the European assessments were tougher, resulting in the discovery of a defective locking hinge on the third row seats. In a crash, there is the potential that the seat would fall forward.

The brand began informing customers of the recall on April 11, and Tesla expects all of the estimated two-hour repairs to be completed in about five weeks.

While this is the first recall for the Model X, this is not Tesla’s first time taking precautionary measures.

In 2014, the brand issued an update for the power adapters used to charge its Model S sedans, noting issues with overheating and a potential for fire. It impacted about 29,000 cars.

The same year, German automaker BMW recalled 1.6 million 3 Series vehicles produced between 1999 and 2006 as a measure of caution.

The airbag in the targeted vehicle could potentially explode in certain circumstances, and the brand wanted to remove all likelihood of a crisis. Following the rolling crisis at General Motors, automakers everywhere must be extra diligent about vehicle safety (see story).
