These floating bamboo rafts seen when crossing Miyajima strait are oyster farms, a local specialty of Hiroshima prefecture. Oyster farming goes back about 450 years in Hiroshima, and about 330 years in Miyajima. During the oyster festival every February one can taste the oysters farmed in Onoseto, famous for their excellent taste and texture.
